Senate Votes to Dismiss First Article of Impeachment Against Mayorkas

Mayorkas Impeachment Trial Set to Begin at 1 PM

Senators to Be Sworn in as Jurors

Washington, D.C. - The United States Senate on Wednesday voted to dismiss the first article of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, with all 100 senators voting along party lines. The trial for the second article of impeachment will begin at 1 PM today, with all senators sworn in as jurors. House Republicans have impeached Mayorkas twice, once failing and then succeeding by a narrow margin. The charges stem from Mayorkas' handling of the southern border, which Republicans allege has been a failure. "Mayorkas has betrayed the public trust and violated the Constitution by willfully and systemically refusing to enforce border security laws," said House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH). Democrats have defended Mayorkas, arguing that he has been doing the best he can under difficult circumstances. "Secretary Mayorkas has been a strong and effective leader of the Department of Homeland Security," said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY). "He has made significant progress in securing our borders and protecting our national security." The outcome of the impeachment trial is uncertain. If Mayorkas is convicted on both articles of impeachment, he could be removed from office. However, it is unlikely that two-thirds of the Senate will vote to convict him.
